My sister and I went on a short trip in Seoul this autumn. Each morning, we visited one cafe before beginning our “shopping battle”. A lot of the cafes in Seoul are chain cafes but it doesn’t necessarily mean each of the stores would lack a peculiar style of their own.
Coffeesmith near Hongdae is a free standing cafe with two storeys. I was very amazed to see that a lot of the cafes and restaurants in Seoul are free standing buildings with unique and representational exterior and interior. This cafe here, near to the Hongik University, opens from 9am to at least 1:30am everyday, offering a comfortable open-aired space for many students, trendy shoppers and tourists for a short coffee break or long study hours powered by caffeine. For your information, it’s also the filming location for the Korean drama “It’s okay, that’s love”.
At the upper level of the cafe there’s a patio area if you feel like a bit of sun but can’t stand the cold or windy weather in winter.
We had chosen to sit in the outdoor area at the back of the ground level as the weather was nice and warm.
The food selection at Coffeesmith wasn’t very wide; my sister picked the “Smith honey baguette” and I picked an “Apple cinnamon tart”. The baguette was softer than the ones we normally have and was buttery and sweet. The stuff at the top of the apple tart looked like crumbles to me but it didn’t taste as crispy and buttery as crumbles; the filling was like the one in apple pies so it was quite satisfying.
As a chain cafe I would say their coffee is quite up to standard. The overall taste is well balanced, not overly bitter and the creaminess of the coffee was well maintained all the way through.
As we were sitting at the back of the cafe, we discovered this street art next to the back of Coffeesmith. It is such a representation of Hongdae as a vibrant and artistic district. Discover more of these wall arts if you visit the area one day 🙂
